Capital punishment -- the legal execution of individuals guilty of capital crimes -- is a tradition of justice as old as human civilization. Until recent times, almost every human being understood the principle that the only just penalty for some crimes is the death of the offender; in other words, there are some criminal acts so heinous that those who commit them forfeit the right to live. Today, however, the concept has become controversial.
This web site advocates the use of capital punishment. It contains a detailed study outline on the subject, looking at the subject primarily from a biblical, perspective, but also from historical, legal, and practical viewpoints. Also included is a page of links to many other pro capital punishment web resources.
Those who favor the use of the death penalty do not do so because they are spiteful or self-righteous (or at least they shouldn't do so), but simply because the principle of capital punishment is deemed to be right. And in the end, this may be the point that the whole discussion comes down to: is there or is there not an objective moral law to which all individuals and societies are amenable? If so, it does not matter what any of us prefer to believe, but only what the moral law requires. As someone has said, it doesn't matter who is right, but only what is right.
These readings are offered in the hope that they will be received fairly and with an open mind. Capital punishment is an emotional subject, of course, and rightly so. But emotion can sometimes make it difficult for us to think carefully and helpfully. We do our best when we think with all three components of our minds: intellect, emotion, and will. So may we each -- advocates and critics alike -- set ourselves the goal of listening, learning, and submitting ourselves respectfully to every "true-north" principle that exists to guide us in this world.
